The objective of this call topic is to develop and mature a new suite of advanced technologies for propulsion, power, and thermal management systems for fighter aircraft. These technologies should be applied in a modular and flexible manner to different sizes and types of systems, operating within a System-of-Systems (SoS) configuration. The SoS framework integrates various interconnected elements, including manned and unmanned systems, swarms of drones, and auxiliary platforms, enabling greater operational flexibility.
Military conflicts are becoming increasingly complex, requiring enhanced adaptability in military aviation. The 6th generation of fighter aircraft will transition from a platform-oriented design to a SoS model, integrating Manned and Unmanned Teaming (MuM-T), Unmanned Collaborative Combat Aircraft (UCCA), and other adjunct platforms. This shift enhances operational effectiveness across multiple domains: air, land, sea, space, and cyber.
This initiative seeks to address challenges related to stealth capability, operational range, and electronic warfare by developing advanced propulsion systems with improved energy and thermal efficiency. The project will focus on achieving seamless integration of propulsion technologies within the SoS configuration, ensuring compatibility with future mission requirements and operational needs.
Proposals must provide a validated suite of advanced propulsion and energy management technologies, demonstrating enhanced efficiency and effectiveness. Studies should explore the integration challenges of these technologies in various airborne platforms, with a particular focus on UCCA. Solutions should also contribute to improved ecological sustainability.
Proposals should include research on propulsion system trade-offs, engine integration, electronic engine control, and manufacturing innovations. Testing on ground or flight vehicles may also be proposed to validate the technologies. Activities should cover system studies, design, prototyping, and testing, ensuring the maturity and validation of critical propulsion and energy management solutions.
The expected impact includes facilitating the introduction of new aerial propulsion technologies through cost and time reduction, enhancing EU technological sovereignty, strengthening industrial collaboration across Europe, and contributing to EU aerial superiority and strategic autonomy.
