Canadian engineering biology R&D partnering delegation to the United Kingdom

Description

The Canadian Engineering Biology Partnering Delegation to the United Kingdom supports Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in exploring collaboration and business opportunities with UK partners in the field of engineering biology. Through a five-day mission to the UK (London and Bristol, December 8–12, 2025), selected participants will gain insights into the UK engineering biology ecosystem, engage in matchmaking events, attend site visits, and establish R&D partnerships aimed at future co-innovation projects. The delegation serves as a preparatory step toward a Canada–UK joint funding competition in engineering biology planned for Spring 2026.

Funding Information

  • Funding per participant: Up to 50% of eligible expenses, to a maximum of CAD $15,000 (for travel, accommodation, and related participation costs).
  • Funding type: Non-repayable financial contribution (cost-sharing).

Submission Details

  • Application deadline: October 26, 2025
  • Notification of selection: November 3, 2025
  • Delegation dates: December 8–12, 2025 (London & Bristol, UK)
  • Application process: Submit online application via the Trade Commissioner Service website (CIIP portal).

Eligibility

Eligible Applicants:

  • Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are:
    • Profit-oriented and incorporated in Canada
    • Actively engaged in R&D and commercialization
    • Capable of undertaking international R&D collaboration
  • Canadian research or not-for-profit organizations may participate but are not eligible for CIIP funding under this delegation.
  • Eligible Partner Country: United Kingdom (UK)

Submission Conditions

  • Applicants must demonstrate readiness for international collaboration and potential for market or R&D partnership with UK organizations.
  • Participants must be able to travel to the UK for the delegation dates.
  • CIIP funding supports only eligible Canadian SME participants.
  • Funding decisions are based on technology merit, international collaboration potential, and alignment with CIIP objectives.

Expected Outcome

  • Strengthened Canada–UK R&D partnerships in engineering biology.
  • Increased understanding of the UK engineering biology market and innovation ecosystem.
  • Identification of potential UK collaborators for future joint R&D projects.
  • Enhanced commercialization opportunities for Canadian engineering biology technologies.
  • Preparation for participation in a future Canada–UK joint R&D funding competition (Spring 2026).

  • Focus on engineering biology and biotechnology-enabled applications (excluding human health).
  • Priority application areas:
    • Agriculture and food production
    • Clean technologies and environmental solutions

  • Activities include pre-briefings, participation in a UK engineering biology conference, B2B matchmaking, and networking with UK research institutions and companies.
