The call "Cities Amidst Climate Change" provides funding for Dutch-Chinese consortia to conduct research into improving physical and social resilience in urban areas. Consortia work together to investigate practical measures to address the impact of climate change, with the aim of making cities more resilient to future challenges.

Purpose

Climate change is a global challenge that can only be addressed through transnational collaboration. This call is open to research that focuses on strengthening the physical and social resilience of urban areas. Research can focus on urban renewal and the transformation of urban areas, such as the Binckhorst (in the Netherlands) and Guangzhou’s Zhuhai district in China. Research can also focus on historical cities such as Utrecht and Xi’an that face the challenge of preserving their heritage while adapting to climate change. Growing urban populations require safe, healthy and inclusive living environments. Collaborative research should contribute to mitigating climate risks through renovation, reconstruction and redevelopment of urban areas in both the Netherlands and China.

Who can apply

Eligible consortia include Dutch and Chinese researchers, with main applicants, co-applicants from different organizations, and a public/private collaboration partner. Dutch side of the consortium:

• One main applicant, who will be the project leader on the Dutch side
• At least one co-applicant, who is of a different organisation than the main applicant; Please note: a different faculty or different department is not sufficient;
• A collaboration partner from a public, semi-public or private practitioner organisation (for-profit or not-for-profit) from either the Netherlands or China.

Chinese side of the consortium:

• One main applicant, who will be the project leader on the Chinese side
• A minimum of two and maximum three teams from universities / institutes, or a partner from a public, semi-public or private practitioner organisation, who replaces one of the teams. The university or institute of the main applicant counts as one of the teams.

• What to apply for
• Consortia can apply for up to 700,000 euros at NWO and for a maximum of RMB 3,000,000 at NSFC.
• Different costs can be reimbursed from the NWO and NSFC grants, as specified in the Call for Proposals.
