This call supports bilateral research and development projects between Germany and the Western Balkans within the framework of the German Federal Government's strategy for the internationalization of science and research. The initiative aligns with the program "Strengthening Germany in the European Research and Education Area" and is part of broader efforts, including the Berlin Process, to integrate the Western Balkans into the European Union and its innovation ecosystem.

Key goals include promoting political and economic stabilization in the Western Balkans through enhanced research collaboration. Special focus is placed on joint projects in the thematic areas of Digital Transformation, Green Deal, and Healthy Societies. Projects should aim at long-term partnerships, strengthening local research capacity, and reducing brain drain by supporting early-career researchers via the "BMBF early career groups". Each group must include a junior lead researcher based in the Western Balkans.

Funding is available for collaborative R&D projects, including both individual and consortium-based initiatives. In addition to scientific outcomes, the projects are expected to develop commercialization strategies for their results and involve industry partners, especially SMEs. The initiative encourages the integration of social sciences and humanities where applicable.

Eligible applicants include German universities, research institutions, and companies (especially SMEs) with at least one partner from a Western Balkan country. Funding will also support staff exchanges, travel, workshops, patenting costs, and science communication. Funding of up to 300,000 Euro per consortium is provided over 36 months.
