Innovative Earth Observation Services in Support of Maritime Litter Detection and Ship Source Pollution Policies

This funding call focuses on innovative Earth observation technologies to enhance maritime litter detection and ship source pollution monitoring. It aims to develop space-based sensors, improve the use of artificial intelligence for spill and litter identification, and address the evolving needs of national maritime authorities. These advancements will support compliance with the Ship Source Pollution Directive and contribute to higher environmental protection of marine ecosystems. The project must demonstrate advanced technological solutions, integrate research results into operations, and engage with relevant stakeholders, including the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). Activities should achieve TRL 7-8 by the project's end, with special emphasis on using Copernicus and Galileo/EGNOS services.

Scope

• Development and demonstration of space sensors for detecting oil spills, chemical products, sewage, garbage, and other pollutants on the sea surface.
• Use of artificial intelligence to improve the identification and characterization of spills and garbage.
• Detection of oil spill volume, thickness, and type through spectral signatures.
• Identification of polluters using vessel-specific spectral signatures.
• Support for MARPOL Annexes I to VI through advanced monitoring technologies.
• Integration of research results into operational frameworks with collaboration from EMSA and related bodies.
