Optical Modelling and Thin Film Stack Design

Fraunhofer FEP performs optical thin film stack modelling for

  1. designing a thin film stack towards a target transmission or reflection spectrum or color appearance
  2. elaborating optical properties of thin film stacks on various substrates (plastic, metal, glass) including the calculation of e.g.:
    • transmission, reflection and absorption spectra,
    • color and its angular dependence and color rendering index
    • weighted transmission towards, e.g. the human eye response or absorption behavior of solar cells

Our optical design tools support single and multi layer systems and graded layers.

Applications include e.g.:

  • Antireflection coatings or highly reflective systems
  • optical filter: low-pass, high-pass, band-pass
  • low-e and heat mirror coatings
  • optimized encapsulation films and light-incoupling to solar cells
  • decorative surfaces with specific color appeareance
  • fraud protection and security labels
  • tuning color rendering and appearance in smart windows


Specifications and Deliverables
– Report with the optical design results:
– either including a proposal for a thin film stack including processes
– or the spectra and optical properties of the system provided by the customer
