Set of sustainability criteria and indicators for bioeconomy implementation

Result description

Around 477 indicators were collected from literature and other sources. Most of them related to the economic imperative, followed by the environmental and social imperative. This extensive list was shortened by merging indicators with the same mid-point, by removing duplicates (indicators with similar goals were discussed in small groups to find out which indicator is more suitable) and by removing indicators that are not suitable for the evaluation of bioeconomy implementation in the current context. From the extensive list, a total of 61 were pre-selected and grouped to the following criteria: eco-friendly bioeconomy, eco-friendly agriculture, eco-friendly forestry, eco-friendly aquaculture and fisheries, bioeconomy acceptance and recognition, fair and healthy society, biomass availability, competitiveness, contribution to economic development, employment and country’s resilience.

We specifically need / are looking for

The method for selecting criteria and indicators follows a stepwise approach. First, a list of indicators and criteria was compiled from literature, EU projects and the EU bioeconomy monitoring dashboard. Then a pre-selection was carried out based on feasibility for the evaluation aim. This process was accompanied by several discussion rounds in small groups as well as with the entire CEE2ACT consortium via a webinar. Finally, a set of indicators was selected for an online survey to collect the level of measurability from 1 (not at all measurable) to 5 (very likely to be measurable) and the level of importance from 1 (not at all important) to 5 (very important) for each indicator from partners and stakeholders.
