Multipurpose robotic platform for road maintenance interventions

Result description

The main result is the construction of a modular robotic platform that is able to perform several maintenance activities automatically.:

  1. – Robotised sealing of surface pavement cracks

– Robotic cleaning of signalling and lighting

  1. – Automated installation of cones
  2. – Automated installation of safety barriers
  3. – Automated installation of safety barriers

The robotic platform consists of a robotic arm mounted over a mobile platform that can be installed in a truck that holds a multilif system with the proper dimensions. This automatic system allows removing people from dangerous zones, improving safety and avoiding accidents.

Current stage description

The solution is currently being developed and tested in the OMICRON project. Next steps inlcude further development from TRL7 to TRL9.

The robotic arm can be located on any truck, it is not tied to a specficic truck, which makes the solution easy replicable in different places.

There is a high potential value created by this solution in terms of increased control, safety, health, efficiency, and quality of maintenance operations. In these terms the solution is sustainble for its exploiters in the long term.

Value Proposition:

This is one solution that can perform various maintenance operations, this multipurpose nature is unique to the road maintenance market. It leads to:1) more control of the process/ability to monitor the process,2) more safety and health for road operators, replacing dangerous jobs/less staff will be needed (latter helps to deal with the lack of qualified/experienced workers in the field),3) Improved efficiency of maintenance activities,4) Improved quality of preservation activities (e.g. horizontal marks removal more complete, less damage of road surface after markings removal, improved quality of crack sealing).
