The customisable thin-film solar modules are a new energy harvesting material based on a set of three proprietary technologies combined in one unique approach: (1) a inorganic thin-film solar cell,  (2) a digitally controllable serial interconnection that allows seamless integration of customized PV foils into a multitude of applications, and (3) a flexible hybrid glass/metal substrate that offers robustness under the harsh conditions of semiconductor formation, enables the digitally printed interconnection and facilitates a simplified module packaging.

Current stage description

The printed interconnection and the hybrid glass-metal substrate are on TRL6 and are currently produced and demonstrated in near-industrial roll-to-roll processes. Both technologies are compatible with a wide range of thin-film solar cell technologies (CIGS, Kesterites) and upcoming tandem concepts

Value Proposition:

The printed interconnection allows total freedom in PV module design. There is neither a limitation of the PV device shape nor the lot size. The production costs do not depend on labour costs since the process is fully digitally controlled and foremost tool-less. The costs for applying the interconnection are 0.1-0.2 €/Wp and do not depend significantly on the lot size: it is the same to produce 10 or 100,000 units. Hence costs for PV can be dramatically reduced especially for smaller lot sizes. The developed technology package simplifies the seamless and  aesthetic integration of PV in devices
