Result description
Our result concerns a breakthrough rechargeable NiZn battery technology that is a highly promising candidate for stationary energy storage and industrial applications and stands out for its high safety, sustainability and recyclability, in addition to a unique combination of high performance and low cost. NiZn could release the stress on Li-ion battery supply chain by replacing it for stationary applications, in which Li-ion advantages have less added value compared to mobility and portable device applications.
A high cyclability at 8Ah level has been demonstrated by over 3800 cycles at 100% depth of discharge with a low cost reaching an estimation of 180 €/kWh (0.06€/kWh/cycle), close to the objective defined for 2030 (0.05€/kWh/cycle) by the European Commission. The upscaling to 100Ah has been successfully realised, while keeping a promising performance, able to reach the requirements in terms of longevity, in accordance with stationary and grid applications requirements, letting for a higher exploitation of renewable energy sources. Use of non-toxic, non-flammable materials with no geopolitical issues, ensure a sustainable development and energy independence of Europe. The NiZn 100Ah/1.25kWh/kW modules have demonstrated no safety issue and a high robustness. Limited environmental impact and high recycling potential are other advantages of our NiZn technology, promoting a circular economy. The intellectual property of this breakthrough technology belongs entirely to Sunergy, a French SME. Two recently filed patents in addition to confidential know-how of Sunergy protect this IP.
Addressing target audiences and expressing needs
- Grants and Subsidies
- Venture Capital
- Other type of Investment
We are looking for capital equity and potentially additional grant fundings around 5 to 10 million euros for set up and exploitation of a pilot pre-industrial line for production of NiZn pre-serial batteries.
- Public or private funding institutions
- EU and Member State Policy-makers
- Private Investors
R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
We have realised and tested numerous prototypes in relevant test conditions. The next step to be envolved in since now is the pilot production of pre-serial NiZn batteries in order to provide the reference end users with demonstrators to prepare for a shift to industrial and commercial activities by the next three to five years.
According to our TRL level, the business model will be to realise a last step before the industrialisation, which is the pilot phase to then define the valorisation method of technology that can be industrial exploitation of the technology and/or licensing of the technology or selling of the technology.
The industrial fabrication equipment and procedures for NiZn are already defined and are similar to the ones used for NiCd and NiMH battery technologies that are already industrialised at large scale and available in the market.
Our battery technology makes use of abundant and world-wide available materials with high recyclability, promoting a low environmental impact and sustainable development. This technology adresses world-wide markets with high growth potential in the heart of energetic transition.
