Within the framework of the AQUAlity project, the achieved results encompass: 1) Development and application of a protocol for investigating the photochemical fate of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and their degradation products (DPs) as well as AOPs treatment; 2) Elucidation of the significance of photochemical reactions and their contribution to the abiotic transformation of CECs in water systems; 3) Understanding the role of the major reactive species generated during the photodegradation process; 4) Assessment of the toxicity of CECs, and their degradation products (DPs) with the employment of an integrated toxicity approach. With respect to the robustness of the processes, experimental design (DOE) and response surface methodology (RSM) were employed to determine the region where the process is not affected by variations of not significant factors and to identify the factors requiring strict control. We proposed four wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) scenarios based on practicability and feasibility of the application, providing guidance on which factors can be neglected or should be strictly controlled, for each WWTP.

Listing Description
Oceans, seas and watersAddressing target audiences and expressing needs
- Help in technical expertise
- Use of research Infrastructure
- Collaboration
We are interested in providing new knowledge on the effect of natural water constituents in the photolytic degradation of CECs. Moreover, low/moderate removal rates of contaminants by conventional treatment tackle the need for exploitation of Advanced Oxidation Processes to increase removal efficiency. With this respect identification of transformation byproducts (TPs) and toxicity assessment brings some substantial knowledge with regards to the “targeted” determination of potential TPs. We provide expertise in ensuring a safe environment through the efficient abatement of CECs.

R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
Despite the progress that has been made, photolytic and photocatalytic technology for CECs removal remains predominantly at the research stage, faced with several challenges with a view toward demonstrating efficiency at larger scale deployment. Uniform distribution of light, low efficiencies, high energy requirements, and low robustness result in difficulties when scaling up.

Value Proposition:
The composition of water varies and factors like pH, inorganic ions, and organic matter can significantly impact light-induced processes. Therefore, robustness studies are a necessity. Also, undesired more toxic by-products may be generated. As such bioanalytic tools help to understand and realize the potential of this treatment technology before efficient deployment at a larger scale.
