Result description
We have developed the first modular and multi-purpose energy storage system based on 2nd-life batteries to be used for both stationary and mobile applications. Thanks to a patented electro-mechanical interface, our battery modules can be seamless connected like Lego© bricks as a “click & go” system providing the required versatility and flexibility to be used in many different applications. Additionally, betteries’ systems are fully digitalized and cloud-connected so that battery health and performance data is analyzed and reported in real-time. The flexible range of mobile battery systems includes zero-emission generators, storage containers, battery packs and e-mobility solutions and will enable a cost-effective decarbonization of crucial sectors such as residential. In addition, by giving EV batteries a 2nd-life, betteries support a circular economy by reducing the carbon footprint of the EV and avoiding eWaste.
This result consists of the integration of the second-life energy storage solutions from betteries with PV panels, including technical schematics and localized hardware and software integration, enabling green, economic, independent/autonomous energy generation and storage. In POCITYF, the system is tested and demonstrated in a real (non-lab) operational environment. Combined with the certification tests also done in this project, the overall System solution will be brought to TRL 9.
R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
The process and hardware/software required to integrate PV panels will be included as an element of the betteries system (mobile, modular, and multipurpose power systems based on upcycling discarded EV batteries) that is currently commercialized by betteries, and sold via B2B partners to end-customers.
This new solution will expand betteries business by attracting new B2B partners who may want to provide PV panels as an element of the betteries system, enabling users to generate energy autonomously/independently. The solution can serve multiple-use cases (such as electric transport, productive use, such as backup power for micro-enterprises, e-propulsion, and humanitarian aid), across multiple geographic markets.
In addition to its existing B2B channels, betteries will foster collaboration with new partners for bringing this solution to the market. Potential partners include power electronics (i.e., for the development of more efficient inverters/converters), companies that develop software for the smart management of energy storage systems, and grid operators that may be interested in installing storage solutions to support the integration of renewables into the grid.
Other companies that may be interested in providing the storage solution are the providers of PV panels or solar systems, who could sell the solution (PV + betteries system) to their customer base. Indeed, home and commercial storage offer a great opportunity in the context of growing energy prices, where customers are looking for greater energy flexibility (to decide when to consume and store the energy locally generated). Moreover, the storage systems can drive the acceleration of renewable energy installation, and support their integration into the grid, enabling ancillary services. These drivers will strongly determine the market for betteries products.
The same system solution can be installed in other locations
