Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) toolkit for deep geothermal energy projects tailored for stakeholders

The toolkit consists in:

  • Training material for GEOENVI LCA method, with a booklet, video tutorial and jupiter script to generate LCA simplified models for deep geothermal projects;
  • Webtool with simplified LCA models, to allow users to receive reliable first estimates of LCA results on a series of environmental impact categories, with few easily determined parameters. This tool is easily accessible, designed for non-LCA experts and built on four different categories of geothermal installations: EGS, geothermal flash power, combined Heat and Power (CHP) geothermal plant, or Organic Ranking Cycle (ORC) geothermal plant;
  • A Protocol to generate simplified LCA models, to enable future users to generate simplified models for an extended set of geothermal installations;
  • LCA Guidelines for Geothermal Installations, to offer methodological indications and assistance on how to perform LCAs for geothermal systems, beyond general standards and guidelines on LCA.

The GEOENVI project developed the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) toolkit to assess the environmental impacts of deep geothermal energy plants that are planned or already in operation. The purpose of LCA methodologies proposed is to help geothermal project developers to evaluate the environmental performance of their planned project, in particular against fossil alternatives.
