SpaceApplicationServices developed a Robot Command and Control (RC2) center and deployed it for Search and Rescue (SAR) operations for defining unmanned missions, monitoring mission progress and to provide real time updates. The RC2 subsystem’s primary aim was to provide the robot operator with the interfaces needed for safe monitoring and control of the heterogeneous set of ICARUS robots.
The control center together with the exoskeleton has a strong commercial application for remotely operating e.g. underwater or space robots for dexterous manipulation. Applications in the domains of oil and gas exploration, underwater mining and inspection, and ecological habitat monitoring are being studied and commercial partnerships are being pursued. These application areas involve human operators safety, high cost of operations and risk.
