Fraunhofer IAP - Leading Polymer Research
Since July 2025, the Fraunhofer IAP is part of KETMarket as an Advanced Member – adding leading expertise is sustainable polymers and circular plastics to our innovation network.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research (Fraunhofer IAP) focuses its core expertise on the synthesis, modification, processing, and application of polymers and plastics. Thermoplastic bioplastics such as PBS and other polyesters are developed up to pilot scale, reaching quantities of around 100 kg. The Fraunhofer IAP is also an active partner in the Fraunhofer Excellence Cluster Circular Plastics Economy (CCPE).
At its processing technology center in Schwarzheide, the Fraunhofer IAP provides extensive and flexible facilities covering all major methods of thermoplastic processing. Throughputs range from 1 to 20 kg/h, with technologies including extrusion, blown and cast films (mono- and multilayer), blow molding, thermoforming, and 3D printing. Research activities are centered on the development of materials and formulations for sustainable plastic solutions.
In addition, the Fraunhofer IAP is designing PFAS-free ion-conductive materials for use as membranes in electrolyzers and fuel cells. These innovative membranes are more environmentally friendly, durable, and heat-resistant. When combined with catalysts that use reduced amounts of precious metals, they enhance both efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The goal is to create viable alternatives to todays`s predominantly PFAS-based membranes, which, while high-performing, pose significant risks to the environment and human health.
Together we look forward to enabling new collaborations, supporting technology transfer, and shaping innovative solutions for the circular plastics economy.
