Biodegradable PLA foils for printed-electronics grade substrates

Result description

We developed production methods for PLA foils specifically tuned for PE applications — controlling molecular weight, crystallinity and surface finish to meet printability, adhesion and thermal constraints. The process yields foils exhibiting high tensile strength and transparency with lower embodied energy than conventional polymers. Compatibility tests with low-temperature UV/photonic sintering and aqueous formulations show good adhesion and dimensional stability. IP: process know-how; exploitation: dissemination via scientific articles.

Current stage description

Currently, the fabrication of biodegradable/recyclable biobased poly(lactic acid) films is at TRL5. We are seeking Public or private funding Institutions and Other actors who can help us fulfil our market potential.

Scalability

Film extrusion and casting lines can be retooled to handle PLA with modest CAPEX. Localized production in EU film converters is feasible.

Replicability

extrusion and casting recipes are transferrable with QC documentation.

Sustainability

renewable feedstocks and lower lifecycle emissions; end-of-life pathways (composting vs industrial recycling) to be defined
