Result description
The HYSOLCHEM photoreactor is a full-scale hybrid PEC flow reactor (TRL5) for CO₂ and N₂ reduction and wastewater treatment. It operates in solar-powered and electrochemical modes, with dual configurations (photocathode/dark anode and PV+EC/dark anode). Made of corrosion-resistant materials, it includes integrated pumps, tanks, LED light sources (UV/VIS), and full instrumentation. It has been demonstrated with real wastewater under relevant environmental conditions. The HYSOLCHEM photoreactor targets municipal, industrial, and remote wastewater treatment where both pollution removal and resource recovery are needed. It converts CO₂ into CH₄, C₂H₄, C₃H₆, while degrading micropollutants. Suitable for WWTPs, high-COD industries, and off-grid units, it operates in PEC/EC modes and integrates with PV systems. Its dual function suits circular economy and AOP applications in the water-energy nexus

R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
Current stage: Lab validation in relevant environments
Next steps: Pilot testing on PFAS, CO₂, and ethylene targets; safety and pre-certification tests
The technology is modular
Replicability at lab scale demonstrated. Not at market scale
The long term business model is speculative due to the low TRL
