The Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology (INP Greifswald) is a premier non-university research institute dedicated to the fundamental and applied science of low temperature plasmas. As a member of the Leibniz Association, the institute combines application-oriented basic research with the development of innovative plasma-based processes and technologies. Its mission is to translate scientific findings into practical solutions that address societal and industrial challenges in areas such as materials science, energy, environment, bioeconomy, and health.
With around 200 employees, including scientists, engineers, and technical specialists, INP Greifswald is the largest research institute for low temperature plasmas in Europe. The institute works in close cooperation with universities, research organizations, and industrial partners at both national and international levels. This interdisciplinary collaboration enables the transfer of knowledge from laboratory research to real-world applications and supports the creation of prototypes, processes, and market-ready technologies.
Research at INP covers a broad spectrum of topics, including plasma medicine, surface functionalization, materials development, process and energy technologies, and digital and smart data solutions for plasma processes. In addition to research, the institute provides services such as feasibility studies, consulting, and technology transfer. As a non-profit organization, INP Greifswald is committed to high scientific standards, sustainable innovation, and the training and education of young researchers. Through its work, the institute plays a key role in advancing plasma science and strengthening Germany’s and Europe’s research landscape.
