Industrienahe Dissertationen 2026 (Industry-Related PhD Projects 2026)

Description

This FFG call supports industry-related PhD projects (industrial doctorates) carried out by doctoral candidates employed in companies or non-university research institutions with R&D activities in Austria. The programme focuses on application-oriented research with clear economic relevance, aiming to strengthen cooperation between science and industry, support career development of early-stage researchers, and contribute to the Austrian innovation system.

Update: Funding for companies has been fully exhausted. Applications are therefore only open to non-university research institutions.

Funding Amount

  • Maximum funding per project: €110,000
  • Funding rate: up to 50% of total project costs
  • Total budget:
    • €6 million (non-university research institutions)
    • €770,000 (companies – already exhausted)
  • Additional note:
    • Around 50% of funding is reserved for female PhD candidates

Submission Deadlines

  • Call opening: 1 October 2025
  • Submission deadline: 30 September 2026
  • Submission mode: Continuous (rolling)
  • The call may close early if funds are exhausted

Submission Conditions

  • Submission via FFG eCall system
  • Applications must include:
    • Project description and work plan
    • Organisational expertise and infrastructure
    • Cost and financing plan
    • Mandatory attachments:
      • University supervision confirmation
      • CVs of PhD candidate and mentor

Key requirements:

  • PhD candidate must:
    • Be enrolled in a doctoral programme throughout the project
    • Be employed by the applicant organisation (≥860 hours/year)
  • Academic supervision by a university with doctoral awarding rights
  • Project must start within 1 year after submission

Eligible Types of Businesses / Organisations

  • Non-university research institutions
  • Companies of any size with R&D activities
  • SMEs and large enterprises
  • Competence centres and research-performing organisations

Important update:

  • Funding for companies is already exhausted, so currently only non-university research institutions can apply

Eligible Countries

  • Organisations must have a registered office or branch in Austria

Expected Outcome

  • Strengthened links between academia and industry
  • Development of highly qualified research personnel for industry
  • Increased application-oriented innovation outputs
  • Enhanced career opportunities for doctoral candidates (including outside academia)
  • Contribution to economic relevance and competitiveness of Austrian R&D

Scope

The call funds application-oriented doctoral research projects, including:

  • Research in natural sciences and technical disciplines
  • Projects linked to Triple Transition themes:
    • Digital transformation
    • Socio-ecological transformation
    • Sustainability

All projects must demonstrate a clear economic application and benefit to the Austrian economy.
