FWF Digital Publications

Description

The Digital Publications programme of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) supports the publication of research results in stand-alone digital formats.

It aims to enhance accessibility, dissemination, and innovation in presenting research outputs, particularly through interactive and multimedia formats, in line with open science principles.

Funding Amount

  • Maximum funding per project: €50,000
  • Project duration / publication deadline: within 36 months of grant approval

Submission Deadlines

  • Submission mode: Continuous (rolling submissions)
  • No fixed deadline

Submission Conditions

  • Submission via FWF online portal (elane)

Key requirements:

  • Publication must:
    • Present high-quality basic research results
    • Be open access
    • Demonstrate long-term sustainability (≥6 years availability)
  • For accelerated decision:
    • Publication must be based on an FWF-funded project
    • Must include two positive international peer reviews from the publisher
  • Funding decisions made by the FWF Scientific Board

Eligible Types of Applicants

  • Researchers from all academic disciplines
  • Typically affiliated with:
    • Universities
    • Research institutions

Applicants are individual researchers (authors or project leads).

Eligible Countries

  • Projects must be conducted within the FWF eligibility framework (Austria-based research system)

Scope

The call funds digital scholarly publication formats, including:

  • Apps
  • Wiki-based publications
  • Annotated scientific databases
  • Multimedia web-based publications (e.g. audio, video, animation)

Key scope conditions:

  • Publications must present results of basic research of international relevance
  • Outputs must be published open access
  • Projects must ensure long-term availability (minimum 6 years funding/maintenance)
