In a cucumber-melon (donor-receiver crops) case study, the cascade system reduced nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) leaching by 75% (5.44 g N m-2) and 82% (2.82 g P m-2), respectively, compared to a cucumber monoculture system (18.42 g N m-2 and 2.82 g P m-2.
In a tomato-cherry tomato (donor-receiver crops) case study, the cascade system reduced the N and P leaching by 66% (13.0 g N m-2) and 80% (0.82 g P m-2), respectively, compared to a tomato monoculture system (37.66 g N m-2 and 4.17 g P m-2).
Recycling of the nutrient solution in both cascade systems led to improved Water Use Efficiency (WUE) through the reuse of primary crop drainage. In the cucumber-melon experiment, WUE in the cascade system resulted in a 22.1% increase compared to the cucumber monoculture system. Moreover, the application of the cascade hydroponic system significantly increased Nitrogen and Phosphorus Use Efficiencies (NUE and PUE) by 21.7% and 21.4%, respectively. Similarly, in the case of the tomato-cherry tomato system, the WUE, NUE, PUE, and KUE, increased by 42.6 %, 4.0 %, 6.6 %, and 6.6 %, compared to a tomato monoculture system.

The next development steps focus on advancing the system towards commercial deployment.

Through experimental trials, the project determined an optimal cultivation ratio for major crops (tomato and cucumber) with recommended secondary crops (melon and cherry tomato) of 1:0.4 m2. This provides a clear guideline for scaling the cascade system while maintaining nutrient and water efficiency. These standardized ratios, together with defined crop pairing strategies and nutrient management protocols, ensure consistent performance and reproducibility across sites.
The cascade hydroponic system is designed to deliver long-term sustainability benefits. By significantly reducing nitrogen and phosphorus leaching and improving water and nutrient use efficiency, the system supports environmental sustainability through lower pollution and resource consumption.
