High-performance, Circular-by-design, Bio-based Thermosets

Description

This Innovation Action supports the development and demonstration of high-performance, circular-by-design bio-based thermosets for demanding industrial applications. The objective is to replace conventional fossil-based thermosetting materials with sustainable bio-based alternatives while improving circularity through innovative design, repair, reuse, remanufacturing and end-of-life solutions. Projects should demonstrate scalable manufacturing processes that deliver thermoset materials meeting industrial performance requirements while supporting the transition to a circular and competitive European bioeconomy.

Funding Amount

  • Expected EU contribution per project: €7 million
  • Total topic budget: €14 million
  • Expected number of funded projects: 2 projects
  • Funding rate
    • 60% of eligible costs for for-profit entities.
    • 100% of eligible costs for non-profit legal entities.

Submission Deadlines

  • Call opening: 23 April 2026
  • Submission deadline: 22 September 2026, 17:00 Brussels time (CET)
  • Submission model: Single-stage.

Submission Conditions

  • Horizon Europe Innovation Action (IA).
  • Single-stage application.
  • Projects should achieve an end TRL of 6–8.
  • Circular-by-design approach must be integrated into material and product development.
  • Proposal must demonstrate improved circularity through repair, reuse, remanufacturing, recycling and/or other end-of-life strategies.
  • Proposal must include life-cycle, sustainability and techno-economic assessments.
  • Proposal must satisfy the CBE JU IKOP threshold of at least 15% of total eligible project costs.
  • Proposal Part B limited to 70 pages.
  • Standard Horizon Europe and CBE JU eligibility and evaluation rules apply.

  • SMEs
  • Large enterprises
  • Start-ups and scale-ups
  • Universities
  • Research organisations
  • Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs)
  • Chemical manufacturers
  • Polymer and composite manufacturers
  • Advanced materials developers
  • Biorefinery operators
  • Biotechnology companies
  • Manufacturers in the transport, energy and electronics sectors
  • Recycling and circular economy companies
  • Non-profit organisations
  • Other industrial value-chain partners participating in project consortia.

Eligible Countries

Eligible participants are legal entities established in:

  • EU Member States.
  • Horizon Europe Associated Countries.
  • Other countries eligible under the Horizon Europe Rules for Participation, where applicable.

Standard Horizon Europe eligibility rules apply.

Target TRL

  • Project end TRL: TRL 6–8.

Expected Outcome

Projects are expected to deliver:

  • Wider availability of high-performance bio-based thermoset materials suitable for demanding industrial applications.
  • Improved circularity of thermosets and downstream applications compared with current market solutions, considering production, use and end-of-life.
  • Increased replacement of fossil-based thermosetting materials with sustainable bio-based alternatives.
  • Improved durability, repairability and end-of-life management of thermoset products.
  • Contributions to:
    • Circular Economy Action Plan
    • Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability
    • Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR)
    • Chemical Industry Action Plan
    • Clean Industrial Deal.

Scope

Projects should:

  • Develop and demonstrate high-performance bio-based thermosets targeting an end TRL of 6–8.
  • Produce thermosets suitable for demanding applications such as:
    • Transport
    • Energy
    • Electronics
    • Other high-performance industrial sectors.
  • Apply circular-by-design principles throughout material development.
  • Demonstrate improved circularity by enabling one or more of the following:
    • Repair
    • Reuse
    • Remanufacturing
    • Recycling
    • Other innovative end-of-life strategies.
  • Demonstrate that the developed materials maintain or improve the technical performance required for their intended applications.
  • Assess compatibility with industrial manufacturing and processing technologies.
  • Validate downstream applications and compare performance against existing market benchmarks.
  • Include comprehensive:
    • Life-cycle assessment (LCA)
    • Techno-economic assessment (TEA)
    • Sustainability assessment.
  • Address relevant regulatory and standardisation aspects.
  • Build on previous Horizon Europe, Horizon 2020, BBI JU and CBE JU project results where appropriate.
