This call, under the identifier EDF-2025-RA-ENERENV-PSR, aims at developing and maturing breakthrough propulsion system technologies for next generation rotorcrafts intended for military applications. The objective is to create a state-of-the-art, affordable and high-power engine above 3.000 shp (2.237 kW) that overcomes current limitations and meets the increasing power demands of modern EU military rotorcraft systems. In response to the absence of civil applications in this high-power range, the call focuses on establishing new technological bricks required to achieve significant improvements in efficiency, performance and reliability. Proposals must address the design and pre-design phases of an alternative propulsion system, ensuring that the engine and rotorcraft architectures are developed in a consistent manner. A key focus is on integrating novel technologies such as advanced fuel systems, innovative engine control and monitoring systems including AI-based predictive maintenance and digital twin applications. The call further emphasizes the need for technologies that can operate with conventional fuels, Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and even fuels of lower quality, ensuring robust performance under a wide range of environmental conditions including harsh climates, sand, dust, maritime conditions, and extreme temperatures.
In addition to the technical advancements, proposals must offer significant improvements in fuel efficiency, targeting a reduction of specific fuel consumption by 25 to 35% compared to existing engines in the same power class. The design should ensure a high power-to-weight ratio and incorporate features to minimize life cycle costs through simplified maintenance and extended inspection intervals. The intended outcome is not only a versatile propulsion system but also one that enhances the operational availability and survivability of rotorcraft, reducing detectability and improving safety under multi-mission operations such as armed reconnaissance, strike, combat, SAR, MEDEVAC, CASEVAC, utility, and air assault missions.
Furthermore, the call requires a comprehensive analysis of future rotorcraft needs by EU Member States and EDF Associated Countries, integrating insights from ongoing and previous research projects to maintain synergies and consistency across different defense platforms. The proposal should also consider scalability and the potential for broader dissemination of the developed technologies to other aircraft and applications. Emphasis is placed on sustainability by incorporating green technologies aimed at reducing CO2 emissions and enhancing the overall sustainability and recyclability of the propulsion system over its lifecycle. This multifaceted approach is designed to reinforce EU sovereignty in critical defense technologies while ensuring a competitive edge in the international arena.
