This call seeks proposals for the demonstration of innovative approaches to geothermal resource development in both shallow (0-500 meters) and deep (beyond 500 meters) geothermal applications. Recognizing that drilling and subsurface engineering account for significant costs and risks in geothermal projects, the initiative aims to reduce costs upfront, improve performance, estimate uncertainties, and reduce risks to boost geothermal capacity deployment.
Projects may include advancements in subsurface engineering, well design, drilling and completion, reservoir characterization, and development planning. Proposals can explore robot and AI-based simulation solutions, optimization of penetration rates, advanced drilling fluids, new materials for casing and cementing, innovative monitoring systems, and integration into digital twins. Environmental impacts should be assessed, with mitigation measures considered.
Participants must include a clear go/no-go milestone before entering the demonstration phase, delivering detailed engineering plans, techno-economic assessments, and necessary permits. The initiative encourages understanding how geothermal utilization aligns with cultural values and societal interests, enhancing energy justice and citizenship. Involvement of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) experts is required to produce meaningful societal impacts.
Opening Date: 06 May 2025
Deadline: 16 September 2025
