The digital traceability system have two parts, one for those working in the sector (seafood value chain) and one for the general public (consumers).
The tool will track and segregate batches of seafood from the point of sale back to a catch area or farm (Backward traceability). It will be based on the GS1 (for product codes), EDIFACT (for data exchange) and FAO (for species, product presentation) standards. The information will be accessible to consumers via QR-codes labelled on the products packaging. The architecture of the system is based on a Central System that includes a database containing all the information relating to the Batches passing through the supply chain. This database will be fed by the companies along the supply chain either automatically (through automatic electronic data exchanges- EDI) or manually through a dedicated software application.
For consumers, the QR codes will be scanned through a smartphone application connected to the Central System. The app will allow consumers to access information about the product, its manufacturing and its nutritional value.
