Result description
Ficosa has developed a 3,6kW onboard battery charger (OBC), allowing to re-charge from the AC-mains grid the high voltage battery present on electrical (EV) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV). This OBC is a lightweight and compact implementation, achieved thanks to the introduction of wide-band gap power semiconductors and customized power modules.
The chosen topology and structure allows scalability by paralleling several stages, as a result higher power levels are achievable (eg: 7,2kW, 11kW, etc).
FICOSA’s developed device is a 3,6kW ACin to DCout slow onboard battery charger with the following main features: Vac-in range (85Vrms to 264Vrms), Vout range (250V to 450Vdc), Iout-range (0,5Adc to 12Adc) overall power efficiency (85% to 95%), PF (0,98 to 0,99), weight 4,5kg, volume 4,2dm3, power density 0,92kW/l. Operation mode CV and CC, liquid cooled.
Addressing target audiences and expressing needs
- Grants and Subsidies
Ficosa as Tier-1 supplier company (for OEMs) has developed an OBC prototype in the frame of 3Ccar project. This prototype served as a proof of concept for the chosen: power conversion topology, the power semiconductors and the custom designed power modules (embedding the power switching devices).
The above selected features become enablers for optimizing key figures of the OBC like: weight, power density, power conversion efficiency, robustness, reliability and overall cost (materials and manufacture process).
The conceived OBC concept and its features fulfill next generation of OBC demands.
