Bilateral research cooperation Flanders-South Africa

Description

The call supports joint research projects between researchers from Flanders (Belgium) and South Africa to promote international scientific collaboration and excellence. Projects must be integrated bilateral research proposals addressing a common research problem with a shared methodology and work plan. The programme funds fundamental research across all scientific disciplines and allows funding for personnel, consumables, and equipment.

Funding Information

Flemish side (FWO funding):

  • Personnel and consumables: €45,000 – €85,000 per year per project
  • Equipment: up to €150,000 per project

South African side (NRF funding):

  • Up to R1,500,000 per project (R500,000 per year for 3 years) for research-related activities, travel, and equipment.

Project duration: 3 years

Submission Deadlines

  • 3 March 2026: call open
  • 26 May 2026 5pm (local time): FWO deadline
  • 26 May 2026 5pm (local time): NRF deadline
  • November 2026: joint FWO-NRF evaluation panel
  • December 2026: announcement of results
  • 1 January 2027: start projects

Submission Conditions

  • Applications must be jointly submitted to both FWO and NRF according to each funder’s procedures.
  • The proposal must be a single integrated research proposal.
  • Each project must involve:
    • a principal investigator in Flanders, and
    • a principal investigator in South Africa.
  • Proposals are evaluated through international peer review followed by ranking by a joint interdisciplinary selection committee.

Eligible Types of Organisations

  • Universities and research institutions in Flanders acting as the host institution for the Flemish team.
  • Collaboration with South African research institutions through NRF participation.

The call aims to:

  • Strengthen scientific collaboration between Flanders and South Africa.
  • Support high-quality fundamental research projects with innovative approaches.
  • Deliver scientific impact and potentially societal relevance through joint international research activities.

Scope

  • Support 3-year joint research projects conducted collaboratively by research teams in Flanders and South Africa.
  • Projects must be fully integrated proposals with a single central research question, methodology, and work plan.
  • Research must fall within fundamental research in any scientific discipline.
  • Activities should be carried out both in Flanders and in South Africa and demonstrate the added value of international collaboration.
