Postdoctoral Fellowship Japan (FWO – JSPS)

Description

The Postdoctoral Fellowship Japan programme is a joint initiative between the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). The programme aims to strengthen international scientific collaboration between Flanders and Japan by supporting excellent junior researchers from Flanders who wish to conduct postdoctoral research at a Japanese research institution recognised by JSPS.

The fellowship allows postdoctoral researchers to carry out scientific research in Japan for a limited period and is open to all scientific disciplines, including humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Each call provides one fellowship opportunity for researchers from Flanders.

Funding Amount

The fellowship includes financial support provided by JSPS, including:

  • Return travel expenses between Belgium and Japan
  • Settling-in allowance: 200,000 JPY (approx. €1,100)
  • Monthly allowance: 362,000 JPY (approx. €2,000 per month)
  • Travel accident and sickness insurance coverage

Duration of fellowship:

  • Minimum 12 months
  • Maximum 24 months.

Submission Deadlines

  • Call opening: 8 January 2026
  • Submission deadline: 2 April 2026 (17:00 CET)
  • Evaluation by FWO Cross-Domain Panel: June 2026
  • Nomination by FWO: July 2026
  • Final decision by JSPS: within three months after nomination
  • Start of fellowship: before 30 November 2026.

Eligible Types of Applicants

  • Postdoctoral researchers affiliated with Flemish scientific institutions
  • Researchers who obtained their PhD at a Flemish scientific institution.

Submission Conditions

  • Applicants must hold a PhD obtained at a Flemish scientific institution (or obtain it before the start of the fellowship).
  • The PhD must have been obtained within a limited timeframe (recent doctorate) before the fellowship start date.
  • Applicants must not have previously received a JSPS postdoctoral fellowship.
  • Japanese citizens or permanent residents of Japan are not eligible.
  • The application must include:
    • Completed application form in English
    • Research plan prepared with the Japanese host researcher
    • Letter of acceptance from the Japanese host supervisor
    • Reference letter from the current supervisor or head of research unit
    • Copy of the PhD diploma (or confirmation of the expected award date)
  • Applications must be submitted by email to FWO before the deadline.
  • The FWO Cross-Domain Panel evaluates applications and nominates one candidate, after which the final decision is made by JSPS.

The programme aims to:

  • Strengthen scientific cooperation between Flanders and Japan.
  • Enable early-career researchers from Flanders to gain international research experience in Japan.
  • Promote long-term collaboration between Flemish and Japanese research institutions.
  • Support the development of promising postdoctoral researchers through international mobility and research collaboration.

Scope

The programme supports individual postdoctoral research stays in Japan at a host institution recognised by JSPS.

Supported activities include:

  • Conducting scientific research in collaboration with a Japanese host researcher.
  • Developing international research collaboration and networking between Flemish and Japanese research institutions.
