Gottfried and Vera Weiss Award

Description

The Gottfried and Vera Weiss Award is one of Austria’s most highly endowed privately financed research awards, supporting excellent researchers conducting basic research in the fields of meteorology and anesthesiology.

The 2026 call specifically targets basic research in meteorology and related disciplines, funded by the Dr. Gottfried and Vera Weiss Science Foundation and administered by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

Funding Amount

  • Funding per project:
    • €200,000 provided by the Foundation per approved project
    • If project costs exceed this amount, FWF may cover the difference
  • Funding duration:
    • Program-specific (depends on the selected FWF programme)
  • Additional financial conditions:
    • Increased general project costs (e.g. 10% for PI projects, +5% for other programmes)

Submission Deadlines

  • Call opening: 3 February 2026
  • Submission deadline: 28 May 2026 (14:00 Vienna local time)

Submission Conditions

  • Proposals must be submitted via the FWF electronic system (elane)
  • Must comply with the guidelines of:
    • Principal Investigator Projects
    • ESPRIT
    • Erwin Schrödinger programmes
  • Additional requirements:
    • Submission of an additional form demonstrating relevance to the call topic
    • Compliance with Supplementary Application Guidelines
  • Evaluation:
    • Based on international peer review
    • Final decision by the Weiss Science Foundation (based on scientific board recommendation)

Projects must contribute to advancing scientific knowledge in these domains.
