Biotech Business Mission in Japan

 

Description

This Call for Expression of Interest invites EU SMEs, clusters, and eligible companies to participate in the Biotech Business Mission to Japan 2026, organised by the EU–Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation.

The mission enables selected participants to explore the Japanese biotech ecosystem through:

  • Participation in a biotech partnering conference in Osaka
  • Participation in BioJapan 2026 in Yokohama
  • Structured B2B matchmaking with Japanese biotech, pharma, and healthcare stakeholders

The mission aims to support market access, partnership development, and internationalisation of EU biotech SMEs in Japan.

Funding Amount

What is covered:

  • Participation in Osaka partnering conference
  • Access to BioJapan 2026 exhibition & partnering area
  • EU-Japan Centre booth and exhibition space
  • Poster translation and printing
  • Interpreter support
  • Organisation of B2B meetings
  • Pre-mission online training modules

Costs NOT covered:

  • Flights to/from Japan
  • Accommodation in Japan
  • Daily living expenses (meals, local transport)

Participation conditions:

  • A €1,000 refundable deposit is required to confirm participation
  • Limited number of participants (approx. 12–16 SMEs/clusters)

Submission Deadlines

  • Application deadline: 19 June 2026
  • Mission dates: 5–9 October 2026

Submission Conditions

  • Must be an SME, cluster, or eligible company
  • Based in:
    • EU Member State, or
    • Country associated with the Single Market Programme (COSME SME Pillar)
  • Must commit to full participation in the mission programme
  • Must have good English proficiency (recommended B2+)
  • Selection based on:
    • relevance to biotech/health sector
    • strategy for Japan
    • profile and innovation potential
  • One application per organisation (competitive selection)

  • Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs)
  • Start-ups (if SME-eligible)
  • Cluster organisations
  • Companies active in:
    • biotech
    • pharma
    • life sciences
    • digital health / therapeutics
    • AI-enabled drug development

Eligible Countries

  • EU Member States
  • Countries associated with the Single Market Programme (COSME SME Pillar)

Expected Outcome

Participating SMEs are expected to:

  • Develop business partnerships with Japanese biotech and pharma companies
  • Gain market access and commercial opportunities in Japan
  • Identify potential R&D and innovation collaborations
  • Increase visibility in the Japanese life sciences ecosystem
  • Strengthen long-term EU–Japan biotech cooperation
  • Obtain market intelligence on regulation, IP, and healthcare systems

Scope

The call focuses on SMEs active in biotech, pharma, and health innovation, including:

  • Drug discovery
  • AI-assisted drug discovery and support tools
  • Regenerative medicine
  • Digital therapeutics (including drug-device combinations and non-pharmacological therapies)

  • EU–Japan Biotech & Pharma Partnering Conference (Osaka)
  • Attendance and exhibition at BioJapan 2026 (Yokohama)
  • One-to-one partnering meetings
  • Networking with Japanese industry, R&D and investors
  • Pitching and visibility opportunities at EU-Japan Centre booth
