Advanced Materials Innovation Open Call (MAT4EU)

Description

The MAT4EU Advanced Materials Innovation Open Call is an EU-funded cascade funding opportunity supporting manufacturing SMEs working with advanced materials. The call is implemented under the MAT4EU Euroclusters project and aims to strengthen European industrial resilience, innovation capacity, and green/digital transformation through advanced materials innovation.

The programme supports SMEs developing or adopting solutions involving at least one of the following advanced material groups:

  • Metals
  • Polymers
  • Ceramics
  • Composites

Projects must target at least one strategic industrial sector:

  • Aerospace & defence
  • Agri-food packaging
  • Renewable energy
  • Construction
  • Health
  • Mobility

Funding Amount

Strand 1

  • Fixed grant per project: €60,000
  • Funding rate: maximum 75% of eligible costs
  • Minimum total project budget: €80,000
  • Number of funded projects: 10

Strand 2

  • Fixed grant per project: €33,750
  • Funding rate: maximum 75% of eligible costs
  • Minimum total project budget: €45,000
  • Number of funded projects: 19

Submission Deadlines

  • Deadline: 6 July 2026

Project timeline:

  • Start date: 1 September 2026
  • End date: 31 August 2027
  • Project duration: 12 months

Submission Conditions

  • Applications must be submitted in English
  • Applications must be submitted through the MAT4EU grant platform
  • SMEs may submit only one application
  • Submitting applications to both strands results in ineligibility
  • Applicants must provide:
    • SME self-assessment proof
    • Financial capacity self-check
    • Annex Budget document
  • Projects must include at least 25% private co-financing
  • Co-financing must come from:
    • own resources, or
    • private debt financing
  • Public funding and in-kind contributions cannot be used as co-financing

Evaluation:

  • Each proposal evaluated by 2 MAT4EU partners
  • Maximum evaluation score: 42 points
  • Funding awarded to highest-scoring proposals within available budget

Eligible Types of Businesses

Primary beneficiaries:

  • Manufacturing SMEs

Additional eligible/participating actors as subcontractors or service providers:

  • Universities
  • Technical centres
  • Enterprises
  • Research and innovation organisations

Eligible Countries

Applicants must be established in:

  • EU Member States
  • Countries associated with the Single Market Programme (SMP/COSME Strand)

Expected Outcome

The programme aims to:

  • Strengthen SME innovation capacity in advanced materials
  • Accelerate industrial deployment of innovative solutions
  • Support green and digital transition objectives
  • Enhance collaboration across regions, sectors, and value chains
  • Improve SME competitiveness and European industrial resilience
  • Facilitate SME access to international markets

Expected project-level outcomes include:

  • Development and validation of innovative advanced materials solutions
  • Industrial adoption and scale-up of advanced materials technologies
  • Commercial and industrial uptake of innovation results

Scope

The Open Call is divided into two funding strands:

Strand 1 – Product Innovations Supporting European Autonomy

Focus:

  • Development
  • Testing
  • Validation of innovative advanced materials solutions

Objective:
Support SMEs creating innovative products and technologies that strengthen European industrial autonomy.

Strand 2 – Mastering Green and Digital Transformation – Industrial Adoption

Focus:

  • Uptake
  • Scale-up
  • Integration of advanced materials solutions into industrial environments and value chains

Objective:
Accelerate industrial deployment and adoption of advanced materials solutions supporting the green and digital transition.

Projects must be implemented by a single SME applicant, although external entities (universities, technical centres, enterprises, etc.) may participate as subcontractors/service providers.
