The European network TRANSCAN‑4 invites proposals for the joint transnational call JTC‑2026, focusing on translational research into cancer metabolism. The goal is to bridge basic discoveries in metabolic reprogramming of tumour cells and their microenvironment with clinical applications that improve diagnosis, prognosis and therapy.
Eligible applicants are research institutions, universities and non‑profit research organisations located in the participating countries (Germany, Austria, Belgium (French‑speaking), Belgium (Flanders), Canada, France, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey). Private companies may participate as partners within a consortium but are not eligible to submit stand‑alone proposals.
Projects must address one or more of the following themes: - Metabolic reprogramming and its role in tumour initiation, progression and metastasis - Interactions between cancer metabolism and the tumour microenvironment (TME), immune cells and microbiota - Development of metabolic biomarkers for early detection, risk stratification and monitoring of treatment response - Design of novel therapeutic strategies that target metabolic vulnerabilities, including rational dietary interventions combined with standard therapies - Computational and systems‑biology approaches to model metabolic networks in cancer
Funding will be awarded on a consortium basis. The amount per project is determined by the national funding authority and will cover personnel costs, equipment, consumables and travel for collaborative meetings. Project duration is typically 3–5 years.
The submission deadline has not yet been announced; applicants are invited to monitor the TRANSCAN‑4 website and the BMFTR portal for the official call announcement. All applications must be submitted electronically via the designated online portal before the stated deadline.
Consortium proposals should include at least one partner from each participating country, a clear division of responsibilities, and a data‑sharing plan that complies with EU GDPR and national regulations. Proposals will be evaluated on scientific quality, innovation, feasibility, impact on patient care and potential for international collaboration.
Expected Outcome
Translate basic discoveries in cancer metabolism into clinically relevant diagnostics, prognostics and therapies that reduce mortality and improve patient outcomes while fostering international collaboration across participating countries.
Scope
Translational research into cancer metabolism covering metabolic reprogramming, tumour microenvironment interactions, biomarker development, therapeutic targeting, and computational modelling with a multidisciplinary approach to improve diagnosis and treatment.
