Highlights from our Fraunhofer IAP Webinar

Are bio-based plastics finally ready for real industrial applications?

This was the central question of the recent KETMarket webinar with Fraunhofer IAP, held on 18 February. More than 20 participants joined the session to discuss how bio-based materials are moving from research environments into real industrial processing and product validation.

The message was clear: bio-based plastics are no longer just lab concepts. They are being processed, tested and validated under practical industrial conditions.

The webinar showcased several market-oriented examples, including production-ready PBS shampoo bottles, thermoformed dairy cups with strong sealing and compression performance, PLA copolymers for flexible films, and industrial processing routes for PBS and PLA using conventional machinery such as blown film, injection moulding and thermoforming.

Further highlights included bio-based reinforcement fibres, carbon fibres for lightweight applications and practical polycotton recycling pathways delivering fibre-grade PET and regenerated cellulose.

The presentations showed that sustainable materials are becoming increasingly relevant for packaging, lightweight components and circular material concepts.

KETMarket thanks Dr. Matthias Schenderlein, André Lehmann and Jens Balko for their technical insights, as well as all participants for the active discussion.
