The rapid emergence of unmanned systems in all military operational domains leads to radical changes in the operational strategies of armed forces. This call aims to enhance EU capabilities to operate and coordinate unmanned systems in underwater warfare (UWW), addressing challenges such as low communication range, lack of satellite navigation, and incompatible technologies.

Ongoing research on underwater observation, detection, and communications aims to identify novel technologies for improved situational awareness and protection of maritime infrastructure. Current unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) lack sufficient interoperability and the ability to form effective manned-unmanned teaming and swarms (UTS). This call seeks to develop a new generation of Unmanned Underwater Super Systems (UUSS) that can reach TRL 7-8, supporting various UWW missions through standardized, interoperable solutions.

The project will focus on the integration of current state-of-the-art research in underwater warfare, development of modular UUSS designs, and the demonstration of prototypes in an operational seawater environment. Key areas include endurance, propulsion, mission adaptability, sustainability, and future-proofing through certification and qualification.

Expected results include improved EU security capabilities in anti-submarine warfare, seabed warfare, mine countermeasures, intelligence and reconnaissance, and the protection of critical infrastructure. The development will also support the European Defence Technological and Industrial Base (EDTIB) by promoting common interoperable standards and reducing duplication of technology development efforts.
