Application of Artificial Intelligence in Drug Discovery

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is launching a funding initiative to support projects applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods in drug discovery. AI is increasingly proving to be a powerful tool in biomedical innovation, and this call aims to accelerate the drug development process while reducing cost and increasing success rates. Projects must focus on interdisciplinary research, particularly on the adaptation and application of existing AI methods rather than developing new ones. A high unmet medical need and clear application potential must be demonstrated. The scope includes target validation, repurposing of existing drugs, screening and optimization, as well as personalization of therapies. Support is open to consortia between academic and industrial partners, with the academic side leading. Projects may run up to 3 years, or 4 years with a strong transfer plan. Key evaluation criteria include scientific innovation, feasibility, expertise of the consortium, and clear exploitation strategies.
