BBSRC Follow-on Fund: 2026 round one

Description

The BBSRC Follow-on Fund (FoF) supports the translation of bioscience research funded by BBSRC into tangible economic and societal impact. It is designed to help researchers take discoveries to a stage where the route to practical application (including commercialisation, spin-out, licence opportunities, products or services) is clear. Projects funded through this programme must draw substantially on current or previous BBSRC-supported research.

Funding amount

  • Total funding available: £3,000,000.
  • Award range per project: between £100,000 and £800,000 full economic cost (FEC).
  • BBSRC typically funds at 80% of FEC (applicants must cover the remaining 20%).
  • Projects supported by this call can last up to two years (24 months).

Submission deadlines

  • Opening date: 27 January 2026 at 9:00am UK time.
  • Closing date: 31 March 2026 at 4:00pm UK time.

Submission conditions

Applicants must:

  • Submit through the UKRI Funding Service (not Je-S).
  • Include a clear link between the proposed work and previous BBSRC funding (the proposal will be checked for alignment and may be rejected without assessment if out of scope).
  • Comply with UKRI standard eligibility, costing, and application requirements.
  • Provide evidence of how the project will deliver impact and progress towards application readiness.

Eligible types of businesses / organisations

The call is open to:

  • UK research organisations eligible for BBSRC funding (e.g., universities, research institutes, independent research organisations).

Only the lead research organisation can submit the application; collaborators may be included but the lead must meet eligibility criteria.

Expected Outcome

Funded projects should:

  • Progress bioscience discoveries to a stage where the route to practical application is clear.
  • Demonstrate feasibility of translation and identify pathways for further investment or commercialisation.
  • Strengthen understanding of application markets, stakeholder engagement, and potential economic or societal benefit.

Scope

Projects must:

  • Be grounded in prior or current BBSRC-funded research.
  • Focus on proof-of-concept, prototype development, scaling activities, market understanding, business planning or application-ready research that accelerates translation.
  • Represent a defined programme of work with technical and business milestones to clarify a route to impact.
