BE READY JTC 2026 – Advancing Knowledge of Host and Pathogen Dynamics to Better Combat Emerging Diseases (FNRS)

Description

The BE READY Joint Transnational Call (JTC) 2026 is part of the European Partnership for Pandemic Preparedness, supporting international research collaborations aimed at improving preparedness for emerging infectious diseases.

The call focuses on advancing scientific knowledge on host–pathogen interactions and disease dynamics in order to better anticipate, prevent, and respond to emerging and re-emerging infectious threats. It promotes multinational, interdisciplinary research consortia working across human, animal, and environmental health within a One Health framework.

The call is co-funded by the European Commission and national funding organisations, including the Fund for Scientific Research – FNRS (Belgium, Wallonia-Brussels Federation).

Funding Amount

Funding for Belgian partners is provided by F.R.S.–FNRS under its PINT-MULTI international projects scheme.

  • Maximum funding per project (FNRS partner): €300,000
  • Project duration: up to 3 years

Additional rules:

  • If the project involves recruitment of a PhD student, the FNRS sub-project may extend to 4 years.
  • Personnel costs have an average annual cap of €80,000.

Eligible costs include:

  • Personnel
  • Equipment (up to ~20% of total budget)
  • Operational costs (consumables, travel, events, publications)

Indirect costs:

  • Operating expenses: up to 1% within the budget
  • Personnel overhead: up to 2% outside the granted budget

The FNRS is expected to fund one research group with €300,000 in this call.

Submission Deadlines

  • Call opening: 19 January 2026
  • International pre-proposal deadline: 13 April 2026
  • FNRS administrative submission (e-space): 20 April 2026 (14:00 CET)
  • Full proposal deadline (invited applicants): 20 August 2026

Eligible Types of Applicants

For FNRS funding, applicants must meet the eligibility criteria of the FNRS PINT-MULTI regulations.

Eligible applicants include:

  • Postdoctoral researchers (R2)
  • Researchers with permanent research status (R3)
  • Senior research positions (R4) affiliated with eligible institutions in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

Eligible Countries

Projects must involve international consortia with partners from countries participating in the BE READY partnership.

Examples include:

  • Belgium (FNRS – Wallonia-Brussels Federation)
  • Austria
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • and other participating countries.

Each partner is funded by their respective national funding organisation.

Submission Conditions

Key submission conditions include:

  • Applications follow a two-stage submission process:
    1. Pre-proposal submission to the international call platform.
    2. Full proposal submission for invited consortia.
  • FNRS applicants must:
    • Submit the international proposal as part of a consortium, and
    • Submit an administrative application via the FNRS e-space platform within 5 working days after the international deadline.
  • The FNRS administrative application must use the PINT-MULTI funding instrument.

Expected Outcome

The call aims to:

  • Improve scientific understanding of emerging and re-emerging pathogens.
  • Generate knowledge on host responses to infection and mechanisms of disease transmission.
  • Strengthen international research cooperation in pandemic preparedness.
  • Contribute to better anticipation, prevention, and management of infectious disease crises.

Scope

The call supports transnational collaborative research projects addressing emerging infectious diseases and pandemic preparedness.

Projects should generate new knowledge on:

  • Host–pathogen interactions and infection dynamics
  • Biological mechanisms influencing pathogen emergence and transmission
  • Factors affecting disease spread and host responses
  • Interdisciplinary approaches linking environmental, animal, and human health (One Health)

The goal is to produce scientific evidence supporting improved prevention, preparedness, and response to infectious disease outbreaks.
