Bioeconomy International 2026 – Funding of International Collaborative Projects under the National Bioeconomy Strategy

The funding call "Bioeconomy International 2026" by the German Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) aims to strengthen international research, development, and innovation (RDI) collaborations in the field of bioeconomy. It supports German partners within global consortia together with non-European institutions and companies. The initiative is part of the National Bioeconomy Strategy (NBÖS) of the Federal Government, which pursues the goal of establishing Germany as a leading innovation hub for bioeconomy and biotechnology while contributing to global sustainable development goals (SDGs).

A modern bioeconomy provides biobased solutions to address global challenges such as climate change, food security, environmental protection, and sustainable resource management. This call emphasizes the global perspective of bioeconomy, encouraging international cooperation to harness complementary expertise, exchange know-how, and develop innovative solutions. Research consortia are expected to address major challenges while fostering technological sovereignty, economic value creation, and job opportunities.

The measure is designed to fund pre-competitive collaborative RDI projects with strong international partnerships outside of Europe. German participants receive funding, while international partners must secure their own financing. Projects must clearly demonstrate added value through collaboration and ensure balanced work distribution among all partners. Applications must also consider ethical and security aspects of research, responsible data management, and proactive science communication.

Eligible research areas and themes include sustainable bioprocesses, novel bioeconomic products, utilization of residues and CO2-based raw materials, and the application of enabling technologies such as synthetic biology, AI, system biology, automation, and nanotechnology. Projects should aim to replace fossil-based products, increase resource efficiency, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Socio-economic studies alone are not eligible.

Applicants can include universities, research institutes, public institutions with research tasks, and companies of all sizes, particularly SMEs. The maximum project duration is typically 36 months. Funding is provided as non-repayable grants with a maximum of 600,000 € for all German partners within a consortium. The application procedure is two-stage: first the submission of project outlines in English via the Bioeconomy International portal, followed by full proposals upon positive evaluation.

This initiative is fully open to all non-European partner countries (excluding Russia) and does not include bilateral modules with co-funding. Projects must be designed to achieve their objectives within the funding period and ensure alignment with the strategic pillars of the National Bioeconomy Strategy.
