Description

BRIDGE is Austria’s funding programme to bridge the gap from fundamental research to application. The BRIDGE 2025/1 call promotes cooperative, fundamental-research-oriented projects involving at least one scientific institution and one company. Projects must show realistic potential for commercialization and incorporate early-career researchers actively in the project.

Scope:

  • All disciplines and sectors are eligible: natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, etc. 

  • Project type: fundamental research with realistic utilization perspective; clinical pilot studies allowed only if ≤30% of costs and not central to the project 

  • Consortium structure: at least one academic and one commercial partner 

Funding Amount

  • Grant type: Non‑repayable subsidies under “industrial research” category

  • Funding rates (based on largest company size in consortium):

    • SMEs: up to 80%

    • Mid-sized enterprises: up to 70%

    • Large enterprises: up to 60% 

  • Maximum project budget (total costs):

    • With SME (80%): up to €450,000

    • With mid-size firm (70%): up to €514,000

    • With large enterprise (60%): up to €600,000

  • Maximum grant per project: approx. €360,000 (depending on funding rate)

Important Dates

  • Submission deadline: 3 September 2025 

  • Committee/award session: 1 December 2025

Submission Conditions

  • Submitted online via FFG eCall

  • Consortium composition: at least one academic institution + one company located in Austria

  • Companies must be willing to co-finance or actively participate

  • Projects must be new and not subsumed under existing COMET centres (even if those apply)

  • Clinical pilot studies allowed only as minor components (≤30%) 

Eligible Applicant Types

  • Companies (SMEs, mid-sized, large firms)

  • Scientific institutions (universities, public research orgs, COMET centres on new topics)

  • At least one company + one academic partner must form the consortium

Eligible Countries

  • Partners must be based in Austria. Both scientific and industrial participants must have an Austrian domicile .

Expected Outcome

  • Knowledge transfer between academia and industry

  • Projects at the interface of science and practice

  • Inclusion and training opportunities for young scientists

  • Advancement of commercialization or valorization-ready fundamental research
