Collaboration with Slovenia – FWF

Description

The programme supports bilateral and trilateral collaborative research projects between Austria and Slovenia, implemented by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) in cooperation with the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency (ARIS). It is part of the Weave network, which enables funding of closely integrated, transnational basic research projects where researchers from multiple countries jointly develop and carry out research.

Funding Amount

  • Per project:
    • Funding follows FWF programme rules (PI Projects or Clinical Research)
  • Funding duration:
    • FWF as lead agency: up to 48 months
    • ARIS as lead agency: up to 36 months
  • Funding model:
    • Each agency funds its own national part of the project

Submission Deadlines

  • FWF as lead agency:
    • Ongoing / rolling submissions
  • ARIS as lead agency:
    • March 31, 2026
  • Submission rule:
    • Applications must be submitted to both agencies
    • Typically within 7 days of submission to the lead agency (Weave rule)

Submission Conditions

  • Applications submitted via the FWF elane portal
  • Must also be submitted to:
    • ARIS (Slovenia) under Weave procedures

Key requirements:

  • Must follow:
    • FWF Principal Investigator Project rules, or
    • FWF Clinical Research rules
  • Additional conditions:
    • Strong scientific integration between partners
    • Clear division of work and complementary expertise
    • Budget justification per national component
  • Evaluation:
    • Based on international peer review
    • Conducted by the lead agency (FWF or ARIS) depending on submission route

  • Universities
  • Non-university research institutions
  • Research-performing organisations

  • Austria
  • Slovenia
  • Optional: third Weave partner countries (e.g. Germany, Switzerland, Poland, etc.)

The programme aims to:

  • Strengthen scientific cooperation between Austria and Slovenia
  • Enable high-quality joint research through integrated project structures
  • Create added value through international collaboration and shared expertise

Scope

  • Supports joint research projects between Austria and Slovenia
  • Optional inclusion of a third Weave partner country (e.g. Germany, Poland, Switzerland, etc.)

  • Projects must be closely integrated (not separable national sub-projects)
  • All partners must contribute substantially to the research
  • Focus on high-quality, curiosity-driven basic research

    • Open to all disciplines
