This call aims to support the demonstration of innovative thermal energy storage solutions for concentrated solar power (CSP) and solar thermal heat and/or cold applications. The proposed solutions should achieve substantial improvements in terms of performance, cost-effectiveness, and lifespan compared to the current state of the art. Projects must include a clear go/no-go milestone before entering the demonstration phase, delivering detailed engineering plans, techno-economic assessments, and all needed permits. The sustainability of the proposed solutions in environmental and socio-economic terms must be assessed, considering the 'Safe and Sustainable by Design' framework. Where applicable, the demonstration must cover a continuous interval of at least six months, encompassing all possible incidence angles of direct solar radiation.
This initiative supports the execution of the solar thermal implementation plan of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan) and the solar energy joint research and innovation agenda.
Opening Date: 16 September 2025
Deadline: 17 February 2026
Expected Outcome
- Successful demonstration and de-risking of thermal energy storage solutions.
- Improved access to financing through better understanding of bankability.
- Access for grid operators to reliable options to manage variable-output renewables.
- Support execution of the SET Plan and solar energy joint research agenda.
Scope
- Demonstrate innovative thermal energy storage solutions for CSP and/or solar thermal heat and/or cold applications.
- Achieve substantial improvements in performance, cost-effectiveness, and lifespan.
- Include clear go/no-go milestones with detailed plans and permits.
- Assess sustainability in environmental and socio-economic terms.
