Expected Outcome
Projects must seek to significantly improve:
- Productivity;
- Sustainability and the environmental impact of farming;
- Progress towards net-zero emissions;
- Long-term resilience.
Projects should address key sector challenges where automation and robotics can provide solutions, including productivity, resource-use efficiency, food quality and traceability, waste, crop and animal health, animal welfare and sustainability. The competition also seeks to reduce reliance on seasonal agricultural labour where automation and robotics represent a viable solution.
Projects must demonstrate environmental benefits and societal impact, include clear deliverables for measuring sustainability, align with industry priorities and encourage dissemination and knowledge exchange across the wider sector.
Scope
Projects must develop innovative technologies applicable to agriculture, horticulture or forestry, focusing on one or more of the following:
- Robotic and intelligent automated machines and systems for static or mobile operation;
- Imaging, sensing and monitoring devices and systems for collecting and storing data, together with intelligent systems that process data for management records, decision-making and automated actions;
- Post-harvest automation for on-farm and immediate post-farm-gate operations, including horticultural and field-crop preparation, packing and supply-chain systems;
- Intelligent systems for on-farm food storage management and monitoring;
- Intelligent systems for on-farm energy management and monitoring.
Projects must focus on one or more eligible production sectors, including farmed animals (monogastric and ruminant); broadacre crops; horticulture; fruit; orchards; vineyards; protected cropping; controlled-environment and vertical farming; relevant ornamental plant production; and specified forestry activities including tree nurseries, planting, woodland monitoring and management.
