Description
France 2030’s PEPR ATLASea ("An Atlas of Marine Genomes") program, coordinated by institutions including CNRS and CEA, aims to sequence and analyze thousands of reference marine genomes to understand biodiversity deeply. In the context of global efforts like the Earth Biogenome Project, ATLASea seeks to catalog marine life—especially under heightened anthropogenic pressure—to inform ecosystem study, monitoring, and preservation.
Funding Amount
- Axis 1 maximum: €1.2 million.
- Axis 2 maximum: €2.4 million.
- Project duration: 4 years.
Submission Deadlines
- Opening date: 17 July 2025, at 09:00 CEST.
- Letter of intent (expression of interest) deadline: 30 September 2025, at 11:00 CEST.
- Full project submission deadline: 6 January 2026, at 11:00 CET.
Submission Conditions
- Two-stage process:
- Letters of intent (2 pages) explaining the candidate’s capacity to contribute to the chosen axis.
- Selected consortia from stage 1 will be invited to submit full project proposals by axis.
- Evaluation:
- Stage 1: Internal PEPR ATLASea committee (supported by the full proposals committee chair).
- Stage 2: External international expert panel convened by ANR
Eligibility
- Beneficiaries: French higher education institutions and/or research organizations.
- Non-funded participants: Companies and foreign institutions may join as partners but cannot receive funding.
- The call is limited to institutions established in France as fundable recipients.
Expected Outcome
- Axis 1: A robust functional annotation pipeline for previously uncharacterized marine genes, using cutting-edge AI-driven methods.
- Axis 2: Experimental validation of gene functions across marine taxa, advancing our understanding of marine metabolic pathways.
- Overall: Development of novel bioinformatics tools and experimental frameworks, and identification of biologically active molecules from marine sources.
Scope
The call targets projects that leverage marine genetic information to decipher biosynthetic pathways for molecules of interest (e.g., in agronomy or medicine). Two complementary axes are proposed:
- Axis 1: Functional annotation of genes involved in metabolic pathways using bioinformatics and AI (including deep learning) to predict proteins responsible for synthesizing target molecules.
- Axis 2: Experimental testing of these predicted functions using diverse marine biodiversity models—from unicellular planktonic organisms to complex metazoans.
