Funding Guideline for Data Usage Projects in the Field of eHealth (Germany)

The funding guideline supports interdisciplinary pilot projects that advance the research of health-related questions using existing, high-quality, multicentre health data from established German health data infrastructures (e.g., MII, NUM, NFDI, NAKO). It aims to improve the use, analysis, and practical research value of these data assets for clinical and epidemiological research (including secure data processing environments).

Projects must involve collaboration between experts in data science (e.g., data science, medical informatics) and clinical health research and work with already accessible multistudy datasets from national infrastructures. The initiative promotes innovative use of data to support precision diagnostics, therapies, patient stratification, and prediction of disease trajectories and contribute to the integration of Germany into the European Health Data Space (EHDS).

Eligible applicants are universities and institutional non-profit research entities able to submit individual pilot projects; consortium-based projects are not supported under this call. The funding covers project costs according to applicable BMFTR cost guidelines.

The first submission stage requires project outlines by 27 February 2026 via the easy-Online portal; following successful evaluation, selected applicants will be invited to submit full proposals. The results of funded projects may be used only within Germany, the European Economic Area (EEA), or Switzerland.

Key Participation Conditions:

  • Projects must use existing, accessible multicentre health data.

  • Proposed research must address health-relevant questions with applied clinical relevance.

  • Collaborations with local data integration centers or equivalent entities are expected.

  • Data access feasibility (data quality, sufficient case numbers) must be demonstrated in the outline.

  • Only individual projects (not multi-institutional consortia) are supported.

Expected Outcome

The funding seeks to generate:

  • Short-term utilization and analysis of high-quality multicentre health data to answer health-related questions.

  • Medium-term evidence of the value of cross-center data usage.

  • Practical insights that advance German health data infrastructures (GFDI) and improve their usability for research.

  • Strengthened researcher expertise in data quality assessment, data access, transparent reporting, and interaction with data infrastructures.
    (These outcomes contribute to the Hightech Agenda Germany and support linkage with the European Health Data Space).

Scope

Funding supports pilot individual projects that:

  • Employ existing multicentre datasets from national health data infrastructures.

  • Address clearly defined health-relevant scientific questions using clinical, epidemiological, or biomedical analysis methods.

  • Require collaboration between data science experts and clinical health researchers with local data infrastructure units.

  • Demonstrate data accessibility, quality, and suitability for project aims.
    Excluded are projects that generate new primary data or involve datasets outside German national infrastructures.
