FWF Book Publications

Description

The Book Publications programme of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) supports the publication and simultaneous open-access publication of academic books presenting research findings.

It aims to ensure that high-quality basic research results are widely accessible, in line with open science principles and international visibility.

Funding Amount

  • Maximum funding per project: €22,000
  • Funding is provided as a lump sum (module-based)
  • Covers:
    • Publication costs
    • Open-access costs
    • Editing/translation services
  • Additional condition:
    • The book must be published within 36 months of grant approval

Submission Deadlines

  • Submission mode: Continuous (rolling submissions)
  • No fixed deadline

Submission Conditions

  • Submission via FWF online portal (elane)

Key requirements:

  • Manuscript must:
    • Present high-quality, internationally relevant basic research
    • Meet FWF quality standards at the time of submission
  • Publication must:
    • Be peer-reviewed (international level)
    • Be published open access
  • Additional requirement:
    • Publisher must provide two positive reviews (for accelerated procedure eligibility)
  • Decision made by the FWF Scientific Board

Eligible Types of Applicants

  • Researchers from all disciplines
  • Typically affiliated with:
    • Universities
    • Research institutions

Additional notes:

  • Applicants are individual researchers (authors or editors)
  • Editors can apply only for edited volumes (anthologies)

Eligible Countries

  • Projects must be carried out in connection with an Austrian research context or FWF eligibility rules

Scope

The programme funds stand-alone academic book publications, including:

  • Monographs
  • Edited volumes
  • Proceedings

Key scope conditions:

  • Publications must present results of basic research of international relevance
  • Simultaneous open-access publication is mandatory
  • Costs for proofreading, editing, translation, or language editing are eligible
