FWF Science Communication

Description

The Science Communication programme of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) supports innovative projects that communicate scientific findings from FWF-funded research to the public.

The aim is to increase visibility of research results, strengthen public trust in science, and foster engagement with scientific knowledge through creative communication formats. The proposal must be an “expansion project” based on an existing FWF project (ongoing or completed within the last 3 years).

Funding Amount

  • Maximum funding per project: €100,000
  • Project duration: up to 24 months

Submission Deadlines

  • Call opening: 11 February 2026
  • Submission deadline: 13 May 2026 (14:00 Vienna time)

Submission Conditions

  • Submission via FWF online portal (elane)
  • Key requirements:
    • Applicant must be:
      • Principal investigator or staff member of an FWF-funded project
    • The underlying FWF project must be:
      • Ongoing or completed within the last 3 years
    • The project must be carried out at an:
      • Austrian research institution with adequate infrastructure
    • Applicant must have:
      • Relevant science communication expertise
  • Evaluation:
    • Based on international peer review and decision by the Scientific Board

Eligible Types of Applicants

  • Universities
  • Non-university research institutions
  • Research-performing organisations

Important condition:

  • Only researchers linked to an existing FWF-funded project are eligible

  • Projects must be hosted by an Austrian research institution

  • Improved public understanding of scientific research and its societal relevance
  • Increased visibility and accessibility of research results
  • Strengthened trust in science and long-term public engagement

Scope

The call funds science communication projects linked to an existing FWF-funded research project, including:

  • Communication of research results to broad audiences (e.g. public, schools, media, policymakers)
  • Development of new and creative communication formats
  • Activities that translate scientific findings into accessible content
