Horizon Europe – 2nd Opportunity ERC

Description

The Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) of Cyprus announces the HORIZON EUROPE – 2nd Opportunity programme, under the RESTART 2016–2020 framework. The call provides a second chance to researchers and host organisations in Cyprus whose ERC proposals (“ERC Starting Grant”, “ERC Consolidator Grant” and “ERC Advanced Grant”) were of high quality but not funded due to budget exhaustion or received a final score of “B” at step 2 of the ERC evaluation.

Scope of the Call

  • Supports research activities that will allow researchers to improve their ERC proposals and resubmit them to a future ERC call.
  • Projects may include basic research, industrial research, and/or experimental development.
  • Activities must be relevant to the original ERC proposal and fall within TRL 1–8.

Expected Outcome

  • Strengthened ERC resubmissions from Cyprus-based researchers.
  • Improved quality and competitiveness of ERC proposals.
  • Increased chances of securing ERC funding in subsequent calls.

Submission Deadlines

  • Deadline: 30 September 2025, 13:00 (Cyprus time), or until exhaustion of funds.

Submission Conditions

  • Proposals are submitted through the IRIS Portal.
  • Host organisation must be a Cypriot research organisation, enterprise, or other organisation.
  • Coordinator must resubmit an ERC proposal within 24 months of receiving ERC results.
  • The ERC’s evaluation letter (score A not funded, or B at step 2) must be dated after the call’s announcement.
  • Proposals prioritised by order of submission until the budget is exhausted.
  • Project duration: 12–18 months, including time for ERC resubmission.
  • Deliverables include the resubmitted ERC proposal and participation in mentoring/pre-screening activities with RIF.
  • Projects must comply with the “Do No Significant Harm” principle (environmental safeguard).

Eligibility

  • Research organisations (universities, institutes).
  • Enterprises.
  • Other organisations legally established in Cyprus.
  • The host organisation must be based in Cyprus.
  • Researchers must have applied to ERC under Horizon Europe but were not funded.
