This call aims to enhance the integration of inland waterway transport (IWT) into multimodal logistics chains to increase its modal share. Projects should develop robust technical and operational solutions to connect IWT physically and digitally to existing land and waterborne logistics chains. Objectives include defining and testing applications for advanced cooperative smart shipping and smart logistics in at least four demonstration pilots, developing key parts of the IWT-related aspects of a common framework for multimodal data sharing, and fostering collaboration among key stakeholders. The impact of increased automation and digitalization on all stakeholders should be considered.
Opening Date: 16 September 2025
Deadline: 13 January 2026

This draft is provided for informational purposes and may be used to preliminarily form consortia and develop project ideas, but it is offered without any guarantees or warranties.
Expected Outcome
Projects are expected to develop enhanced solutions to better integrate IWT into logistics chains, demonstrate gains in operational efficiency and environmental impact, provide recommendations for an EU regulatory framework on harmonized smart shipping, and organize stakeholder engagement activities to increase the visibility and use of IWT.
Scope
The call focuses on integrating IWT into smart shipping and multimodal logistics chains through digital interconnectivity. Proposals should build on previous projects, develop solutions to connect IWT to other transport modes, define key parts of a common framework for multimodal data sharing, and test applications in demonstration pilots covering different types of goods, routes, and IWT basins.
