Joint R&D Project Call

Description

The Joint R&D Project programme fosters collaborative research between academic institutions and industry in the Brussels-Capital Region. The aim is to:

  • Strengthen academic knowledge and transfer it to industry,
  • Encourage applied innovation in real-world settings,
  • Develop clean technologies that address environmental challenges while enhancing economic competitiveness.

This 9th edition focuses on CleanTech, supporting the EU’s Clean Industrial Deal and the Region's strategic priorities.

Funding Amount

  • Funding Type: Non-repayable grants.
  • Funding Rates:
    • Research Organisations: 100%
    • Micro/small companies: 60%
    • Medium companies: 50%
    • Large companies: 40%
  • Project Set-up Grant ("CONNECT"): Up to €7,500 per partner (max €25,000 per consortium) to support proposal preparation

Important Dates

  • Call launch: 7 July 2025
  • Expression of Interest (EOI) deadline: 27 October 2025, 2pm
  • Invitation to submit full proposals: 21 November 2025
  • Full proposal deadline: 6 February 2026, 2pm
  • Oral defence & evaluation: March–April 2026
  • Earliest project start: 1 March 2026

Submission Process

Two-stage process:

  1. Expression of Interest (EOI): Initial screening.
  2. Full Proposal (if selected): Includes detailed budget, IP strategy, consortium agreement.

Eligibility

  • Research organisations: universities, higher education institutions, research centres.
  • Companies: any legal entity (SA, SRL, ASBL, etc.) based in the Brussels-Capital Region.
  • Entities must not:
    • Be in financial difficulty,
    • Already receive public funding for the same activities (no double funding),
    • Have started the project before applying.
  • Only entities with a registered presence in the Brussels-Capital Region (Belgium) are eligible.
  • International partners may be involved informally but are not eligible for funding.
  • Must include at least one research organisation and one company, both based in Brussels.
  • The effort distribution must maintain a 1/3–2/3 balance between academia and industry.

Expected Outcome

  • Technological solutions with environmental and economic benefits,
  • Integration of academic R&D into industrial applications,
  • Transfer of IP from academia to business,
  • Contribution to the Brussels Region’s sustainable transition,
  • Societal and economic impact (e.g. jobs, spin-offs, ecosystem enhancement).

Scope

Projects must focus on technological innovations in CleanTech that:

  • Reduce or eliminate environmental impact,
  • Improve climate resilience,
  • Use renewable or non-polluting resources,
  • Offer improved performance or reduced cost over conventional technologies.

Relevant application areas include:

  • Renewable energy (e.g. green hydrogen, smart grids),
  • Sustainable logistics and clean mobility,
  • Energy efficiency and sustainable buildings,
  • Waste reduction and circular economy,
  • Environmental/natural resource management,
  • Industry decarbonisation,
  • Sustainable agriculture and food.
