Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP): 2025 – 2026 Round 5

Description

The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) programme supports strategic innovation projects that bring new skills and academic expertise into UK businesses. Projects are delivered through a partnership between a UK knowledge base partner (such as a university, research and technology organisation (RTO), or Catapult) and a business partner, with a project associate recruited to lead the work. The aim is to help businesses innovate, grow, and apply new knowledge directly within their organisation.

Funding Details

  • Total funding available: £10 million allocated for this competition.
  • Funding per project: Depends on project duration and activity; KTP typically funds a share of the total eligible costs (monthly costs for projects usually calculated at ~£8,500/month).
  • Grant contributions:
    • Up to 67% of eligible costs for micro, small, or medium enterprises (SMEs).
    • Up to 50% for larger businesses.
  • The remaining project costs must be funded by the business partner.

Key Deadlines

  • Competition opens: 1 December 2025
  • Competition closes: 4 February 2026 at 11:00 am UK time
  • Applicants notified: 2 April 2026

    • Supervisors workshop by 15 April 2026
  • Project duration: 12–36 months.

Submission Conditions

Applicants must:

  • Complete and submit the application through the Innovation Funding Service before the deadline.
  • Partner with a Knowledge Transfer Adviser (KTA) who must support the application.
  • Provide required documentation and declarations (including costing letters and agreements between partners).
  • Ensure the application is complete and accurate; incomplete submissions will be withdrawn.
  • Not include hyperlinks in written answers in the application form.

Eligible Types of Organisations

Projects must involve a partnership of:

  • Knowledge base partner (Lead):
    • UK higher education (HE) or further education (FE) institution
    • Research and technology organisation (RTO)
    • Catapult centre
  • Business partner:
    • UK registered business (any size), with at least two full-time equivalent employees.

Subcontractors are not allowed.

Both partners (academic & business) must be UK-registered institutions.

Not eligible: public sector bodies (including government departments), UKRI, and entities owned by UKRI.

Expected Outcome

The programme expects funded projects to:

  • Embed new skills, knowledge and capability within the business.
  • Deliver strategic impact on productivity, competitiveness, and innovation capacity.
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer from academic or research institutions to industry partners.
  • Support the professional development of the associate leading the project.

Scope

Projects must:

  • Be specific and strategic innovation projects addressing challenges within the business partner.
  • Align with at least one of the UK’s Industrial Strategy priority areas (e.g., advanced manufacturing, clean energy, digital technologies, creative industries, life sciences, etc.).
  • Integrate applied academic knowledge into business processes to drive innovation and growth.

Projects must clearly demonstrate the contribution of academic capability to business innovation.
